Belize
Creole Caribbean gateway to the world's second-largest reef.
The culture
Why we bridge here
Belize City is the old capital and the country's cultural crossroads — Caribbean in rhythm, Central American in geography, English-speaking in day-to-day life. It sits minutes from the Barrier Reef and the diving that made the country famous.
Creole, Garifuna, Mestizo and Maya Belizeans live within a few streets of each other, and the food shows it: rice and beans, hudut, conch soup and fry jacks. The swing bridge over Haulover Creek is still opened by hand, twice a day, for boats.
